Tappan’s, like the more common Hoyt’s German Cologne products, were cheap fragrances available at drug stores. There was nothing particularly ‘German’ about them, other than the branding referencing the German city of Cologne. After the anti-German sentiments occasioned by the beginning of World War I, many such companies dropped the ‘German’ from their name.
