Louisiana Indians Walking Along a Bayou by Alfred Boisseau, 1847

Bayou St. John was originally inhabited by the Acolapissas tribe before their relocation to today's Mandeville due to raids on their village by Chickasaws. The Biloxi tribe occupied the area by 1700. The final nation that settled on or around the Bayou St. John area was the Houmas, who lived near present day St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 as late at 1720.
