Abrabam, a refugee from enslavement in Pensacola, Florida, became fluent in the Seminole language after allying with Seminoles. The US government imprisoned Abraham at Fort Pike. In order to communicate with the Seminoles, the US government hired Abraham as an interpreter. It was through this work, Abraham and his family left the fort and “move[d] freely through New Orleans” until the Indian Removal Act forced Abraham and his family to move to Oklahoma. [3]
