In 2011, when property owner Vincent Marcello contacted archaeologists, there was no way of knowing for certain if burials were preserved under the particular portion of the lot where he intended to build. Therefore, an initial permit was issued through the Louisiana Division of Archaeology to excavate a single test unit to determine if this was so. That unit helped to determine the depth at which burials occurred and how well they were preserved in this part of the lot.
