Recovering a coffin during the 2011 excavations.

The goal of the 2011 excavations was to keep coffins as intact as possible for transport to the FACES lab at LSU. While this was better from a preservation standpoint, it also meant that archaeologists knew little about the demographic characteristics of the burials until after they were cleaned in the lab. The images here illustrate the process of recovery, as archaeologists used plexiglass to dislodge coffins from underlying clay, secure them, and lift them out of the excavation for transport to LSU.
