Project Location Map

This is the project location map included in the 1993 final excavation report. The arrow in the middle of the image points to the intersection of what is today Canal Street and City Park Avenue.

***Redaction: Part of the source of this confusion includes erroneous archival information circulated near the turn of the twentieth century. Some nineteenth century historical maps, such as the ones reproduced by Beavers, Lamb, and Greene in 1983 as the site’s “Project Area”, indeed indicate that Canal Boulevard was once mapped as “Cypress Grove Cemetery” (Beavers, Lamb, and Greene 1983: Figure 2). Mississippi River Commission maps dating to 1874 and 1883 and the Cotton Centennial Map of 1884 are two sources of this misinformation; additionally, many maps over the historical period may have delineated the boundaries of the cemeteries correctly, but often confused which one was Charity Hospital Cemetery No. 1 versus No. 2, and often omitted enumerating Cypress Grove Cemeteries at all (Godzinski et al. 2008:14, 22).
