Baptism of Joseph Tio, January, 12, 1795

This is the baptismal record for Joseph Tio, the first child of Marcos Tio and Victoria Wiltz. Written in Spanish, it labels Joseph as a "libre," or free person of color, and the son of Victoria Wiltz, a "mulata libre," or free mixed-race woman of color, and Marcos Tio, whose name was added in after. The facts that Marcos corrected the priest and had him include his name in the record as well as Marcos's large signature at the bottom prove his great love for and pride in his children
