This illustration by Morris Henry Hobbs depicts a dilapidated Gallatin Street house with a food store at the bottom. Because of its location near the port and the markets, buildings on Gallatin Street were often used to sell or store produce. The top floors would probably have been used as rental space for immigrant families.
