The Daughters of Charity served as on-site nurses from 1894 until 2005, when their "Carville Mission" was officially closed.
Public Health nurses began duties here in the 1940's but the chief nurse was usually a Daughter of Charity.

The infirmary, built in 1933, had 68 beds in two open wards--men upstairs and women downstairs. Architects provided screened porches across the front of the building to allow patients fresh air.…
