"One of the largest events held in the restaurant was the luncheon of the Louisiana State Sheriffs Association on April 6th, 1938, during the Association's convention which was held in Gretna. Sheriff Frank J. Clancy of Jefferson Parish was the host of the convention and lunch. As gambling was wide open in Jefferson Parish at that time, a number of slot machines and other gambling paraphernalia occupied space in the restaurant. Herman inquired as to what disposition should be made of the devices and was told by the Sheriff to cover the machines with a table cloth during the luncheon."
